Who am I?

Hi, I am Guus. Since I was a teenager I have been tutoring students from high schools to universities with exact subjects (mathematics, physics, chemistry, etc.). It gives me a lot of energy to aid people that really need a little help.

My lessons are always customised for each student. I change my way of teaching to suit your needs. Are you a visual learner? Then I will draw out as much as possible. Are just trying to pass a test last minute? I will teach you the most usefull tricks to pass.

You have a different way of learning and communicating than the student before you. It is my challenge to adapt my lessons in such a way that they suit you best. For me, this is what makes my job fun!

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Why BètaBijles?

Personally customised lessons

Even though I have a teaching degree, I do not teach. The main reason for this is the inability of teachers to see to the needs of individual students. One student needs more explanation, the other more freedom to explore the subject themselves. As a regular teacher it is (almost) impossible to cater to both at the same time.
This is something I excel at and that is one of the reasons I give one on one lessons instead of teaching in a school. This way I can teach a lesson, that suits the student.

Experienced teacher

Contrary to most tutors, tutoring is not a side job for me. This means I am more experienced with helping a wide range of different students and subjects. For many courses I am familiar with the subjects and have a good idea of what a test would look like.
Simply put, I have a lot of experience with the comings and goings of tutoring and education.

Patient teacher

This might sound obvious, but it isn’t. Giving someone the time and space to ask question, or think about an explanation can be quite difficult.
I will never blame you for not understanding and will just simply start over in a different way, until you understand.
I will not say there are no dumb questions, but I will encourage you to ask them anyway. If everyone keeps silent, because they think a question might embarrass them , a lot of great questions are lost.

Prices

I give lessons for up to four students at a time. In the table below you can see my hourly rates.

Number of studentsHourly rate (per person)
1 student€30,-
2 students€20,-
3 students€15,-
4 students€12,50

Online & Offline lessons

My lessons can be only or offline. For students that live close enough, offline lessons are an option. Otherwise I am available for online lessons.

Online lessons

For my online lessons I use various different videocall software. Mostly I use Skype or Google Meet, but I am fine with any easy to use program.
In order to explain things clearly, I share my screen. I use a touch screen, so I can write and draw when I need to. Most of the time I type my mathematics, because it is more structured and easier to edit. In the picture below you can see some example of the notes I takes during lessons.
Screen sharing is also useful for programming lessons, sometimes I work in the same files online, so the code does not have to be sent back and forth.

Offline lessons

As I said before, I also tutor in person if travel is possible. Lessons can always be at my place in Tegelen and lessons at another location are possible if it is within 10 minutes cycling from my home. Also, I only teach at schools, library, etc. when their is a separate space available for us to work. I don’t teach in common area’s like cafeterias or common rooms. If you are in doubt if your location is suitable for lessons, just ask!

If you smartly combine your tools, then online lessons are just as good (or sometimes better) as lessons in person. This does depends a lot on the subject and the student. Some excel in online lessons, some prefer to work in person. To each their own.
